You may not think of late fall as the season for fresh fruits and veggies. But, think again! You can still get such incredible produce even when the weather is getting colder by the day. Take advantage of the abundance of produce that is still available before it is gone for a whole year. Stock up on these 16 fruits and veggies and keep the spirit of the fall going!
Apples
Most of the time, apples can get boring and bland because they’re honestly just a basic fruit.
But fall is when apples come back in style, and luckily, they complement everything they’re added in. From delicious apple pies to even adding them to turkey stuffings, there’s a lot that can be done with apples.
If you want to overcome the basicness of apples, try these amazing apple turnovers and cinnamon rolls with apples recipes. If you’re up for a challenge, try the amazing cinnamon apple babka.
Beetroot
Beetroot isn’t really a vegetable that we focus on, but in fall, it becomes just about the crux of every delicious dish you’ll eat.
Not only is beetroot openly tossed in salads and served on the side, it’s also featured in delicious dishes, including beet-tinted pasta and chicken. It’s truly a vegetable that shines in fall.
Pumpkins
Alright, this one is a no-brainer. Pumpkins make their yearly appearance in the fall, and they bring loads of happiness with them.
Whether it’s exploring a pumpkin patch, carving scary designs for Halloween, or trying amazing latte combos at Starbucks, pumpkins really bring happiness wherever they go.
And if you’re willing to share the love, try baking your very own pumpkin spiced donuts or pumpkin banana muffins. Of course, you can even try the classy pumpkin cream cheese pie.
Butternut squash
Butternut squash is in season during fall, so we’ll see a lot of restaurants change their menus to feature this veggie.
But don’t underestimate this vegetable; it may not sound that good, but once you try cinnamon-roasted butternut squash or eat its soup, you’ll be waiting for fall every year.
Grapes
Grapes, specifically red ones, are in season during fall, and we all know what that means (wine glasses clink).
Not only are grapes the fruit that bless us with a sweet concoction every year, they’re also a prime ingredient in desserts and other drinks. If there’s one time during the year when drinking wine is acceptable, it’s when grapes are in season.
Carrots
Fall wouldn’t be fall without carrots, and luckily, we have a lot of ways to enjoy this plain fella.
Of course, we frequently use this vegetable throughout the year, but the carrot crop is especially ripe and fresh in fall, so everything tastes just a tad bit better.
We love seeing these orange folks in soups and chowders, but nothing beats desserts like mini carrot cakes.
Pears
Among many fruits, fall brings pear in all their juicy glory. And why not? They are super yummy!
Pears are a great fruit, but they always just need a little edge to be loved. Luckily, there are a lot of ways to enjoy pears, like poaching them or even making a decadent galette with them.
Sweet potatoes
The best time to try sweet potato fries is in the fall because that’s when the vegetable is in season.
Of course, sweet potato fries are awesome, but we can add this vegetable to everything, including soups, chowders, or as a side, which makes the season feel even friendlier.
Figs
We think figs are old people's fruit, but that’s only because we have been eating them wrong.
Figs are one of the many fruits that are in season during the months of June through September, and one way to enjoy them is by making a scrumptious fig frangipane tart.
But there are many other delightful ways to eat figs, like making honey-poached figs or baking up a fig polenta mini cake.
Spinach
Spinach is one of the many vegetables that grow during fall, which means we’ll have a lot of fun this year.
Sure, Popeye may have failed at getting the kids to try spinach, but this season, we’re trying various dishes that will definitely make them fall in love.
Spinach can be very boring, so instead of diving into usual recipes, try making spinach fritters or spinach and cottage cheese balls or even eating steamed spinach.
Dates
Dates are in season in the fall, and no, we don’t mean hanging out with your loved one.
The decadent fruit is too delicious to pass up, so we better stock up on it when it appears in the market over the next few days.
Dates are one of the best fruits in existence, and it’s not only because they taste a little bit like snickers chocolate. Dates are extremely healthy and nutritious, and eating just 1-2 of them will give you an energy boost much stronger than any caffeinated drink you know.
Broccoli
We have broccoli, which isn’t really as popular with the kids, but we all know how amazing this vegetable really is.
Most people fail to enjoy broccoli because it wilts easily, but luckily, this problem will fade away over the next few days. Broccoli is one of the best veggies to have on its own, even if we’re simply sauteing or steaming it.
We can even try making savory pies with broccoli or try it in pasta or any other unique combo. And 9 times out of 10, it’ll work!
Kale
We love kale in all different forms. We adore sauteed kale, kale salads and even kale chips. There is just so much you can do with this fall veggie!
Kale leaves can be a little tough so try massaging the leaves to soften them up. It is a little pro-tip that works! It will transform the way you prepare and eat this delicious leafy green.
Peppers
Peppers grow all summer long but they finally start to change color in the fall. Those green peppers you have been waiting for all season long are finally turning red! If you have peppers planted in your garden, make sure you keep them in the ground throughout the entire fall. They will continue to grow and thrive even as the temperatures drop. Pepper plants are pretty hardy!
Arugula
Arugula loves the cold. It grows best in the early spring and, lucky for us, in the late fall. There is something especially delicious about tender, delicate fall arugula. It is particularly peppery and has none of that bitter flavor that spring arugula sometimes has. We are in love with fall arugula and will be putting it on absolutely everything.
Brussel Sprouts
Brussels sprouts take months and months to finally be ready to eat. At the end of the fall, those sprouts you have been waiting for all season are finally ready! Enjoy as many Brussels sprouts as you can while they are in abundance. They will be very hard to find come springtime.
