The world is in a state of shock today as King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer. As the king steps back from his public duties, everyone is concerned for his health and worried about the royal family in general. As details will surely continue to emerge, here is a quick look at everything we know so far.
It Started With a Corrective Procedure
An article written by CNN revealed that King Charles III went into a London hospital in January for a corrective procedure to help an enlarged prostate. However, tests done at the time revealed that he had a form of cancer. It was said not to be prostate cancer specifically, but it was during this hospital visit that the cancer was first detected.
The Type of Cancer is Unknown
The Palace has not yet revealed what type of cancer the King has. The level of the cancer and treatment plan have also not been made public. BBC stated that the King has begun a "schedule of regular treatments" but that was the only information given. No further details have been shared other than to state that it is not prostate cancer as many speculated.
How Was His Cancer Detected?
Cancer is typically diagnosed as doctors ask patients about their symptoms and then do tests and examinations. Many times, blood tests and x-rays are part of the medical process. Sometimes, cancer is found when patients go in for other treatments and are screened as a precursor to surgery. This seems to be how the King's cancer was first discovered, as an unpleasant revelation during a previously scheduled procedure for an enlarged prostate.
Cancer Treatment for The King
The Palace has not said what type of cancer treatment, if any, the King will receive. There are many different ways to treat cancer and much of it depends on the type and where it is located. Some cancers require surgery while others can be treated with chemotherapy drugs. We do not know what route the King's treatment will take as of yet.
Is King Charles in the Hospital?
King Charles is not in the hospital currently. He returned to London on Monday morning and, according to the Palace statement, will be treated from home as an outpatient. Hopefully, he is able to stay comfortable and at home while he receives the best care possible.
The King is Still In Charge
King Charles has stepped back from his scheduled public events, but that doesn't mean that he is off the job! He is still continuing to work within his constitutional role as the head of state. He is still doing paperwork and having private meetings. The King is definitely still in charge!
How is King Charles Feeling?
The Palace did release a statement saying that he is "wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible". Hopefully, he remains positive and feels well enough to continue to lead his country!
What Happens if King Charles Cannot Do His Duties?
We are hoping that King Charles continues to push through his recent diagnosis and feels able to continue with his duties as King. However, if he is unable, the "counselors of state" can be appointed to assist the monarch. The next people in line to help include Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Princess Royal.
Why Did King Charles Tell The World About His Diagnosis?
The King wanted to go public about his cancer diagnosis to support all the others in the world who are also fighting cancer. The palace statement said that he wanted the loved ones and healthcare professionals who help those with cancer to feel recognized. This is a very selfless view and hopefully will raise awareness about the severity of cancer and how it can be so indiscriminate.
Who is Treating The King's Cancer?
King Charles III has his own team of doctors and professionals who will guide him through this difficult time. The King formally thanked his medical team in the Palace statement, saying that their swift intervention was incredible. He will continue to be treated at home for the time being and we are sure he will get the best care imaginable!
In Contact With William and Harry
Palace officials confirmed that the King has reached out to both Prince Willaim and Prince Harry to tell them about the cancer. It has also been said that Prince Harry will fly to England from his home in the US to visit his father despite their recent estrangement. Now is the time when the King needs the support of his family the most so we are very happy to hear that he is getting it.
Will We Know More Soon?
It is very unclear if the Palace will reveal any more information about King Charles III and his cancer diagnosis. We will have to wait for the coming weeks to see if more information is given to the public. In the meantime, we can all just hope that he is continuing to remain positive and feel well as he receives care.
