Let’s be honest; most of us jump through interests, so life gets boring after a while.
Dr. Howard Tucker said an active interest in the world kept him on his feet, so he’s mentally and physically active. He keeps up with worldly affairs, actively volunteers when possible, and keeps a youthful mindset.
So embrace the world, share love, and spread some kindness because apparently, it’s a great way to boost your lifespan.
Orthodoxy isn’t always bad
In the olden times (ahem, just a decade ago), keeping your diet balanced by adding loads of fruit, veggies, and protein was the way to go. We stumbled away from that by experimenting with various weight loss diets, and while they work, Dr. Howard claims a traditional diet has kept him as healthy as possible.
For him, eating fruits regularly and minimizing carbs has been one of the most important things that contributed to his age.
Embracing seasons
We tend to fixate on particular trends (pumpkins in the fall, mangos, and watermelon in the summer), and while it seems like an unhealthy obsession, Dr. Howard claims embracing seasonal fruits and vegetables is an excellent thing.
Dr. Howard doesn’t shy down from seasonal foods and includes them in his diet. This not only lets him enjoy every season but adds diversity to his plate.
Colorful plating
Do you know those Instagram food bloggers who always have an aesthetic plate lined up? We are talking about the ones with rice, fish, leafy greens, and vibrant red veggies on them. Well, they’re not that bad. In fact, for Dr. Howard, making a diverse and colorful plate has kept his body in top-notch condition.
Not only does this 101-year-old neurologist eat fish on a regular basis, but he also adds a bit of rice and seasonal vegetables. And that’s not the only secret. For Dr. Howard, adding lots and lots of broccoli has done wonders.
Sure, for us picky eaters, this sounds like a hefty task, but he and his wife like to experiment with flavors and try the same dish in different ways, so there’s never a dull moment in life.
Sugar? Yes. Carbs? No.
Don’t think Dr. Howard’s traditional diet is keeping him from eating sweets. In fact, he and his wife make a point to eat at least one dessert daily, which is more than what we can do. But the duo managed to add a healthy twist to it.
Instead of relying on the typical desserts like cupcakes and muffins (I know!), the two eat desserts that are as sweet as sugar but with fewer carbs in them. So chocolate, ice cream, sweet fruits, custards, trifles…they’re all in the mix.
Creative fasting
While intermittent fasting is the usual way people keep up with a healthy lifestyle, Dr. Howard takes an easier and much different route. The neurologist introduces his own fasting regimen, which includes a light but fulfilling breakfast, an appetizing dinner, and nothing in between.
According to Dr. Howard, eating cereals and fruits for breakfast gives him enough energy to power through the day. And then he skips right to dinner, where he eats until he’s full.
Surprisingly, skipping lunch has revealed one benefit: no drowsiness. Without drooping everywhere, Dr. Howard is able to stay alert, so he rarely feels exhausted. Of course, this modified diet isn’t suitable for everyone, and no one should try it without their physician’s approval, but it works for him!
Healthy diet, healthy life
A healthy diet is no joke, guys. It takes a lot of patience on Dr. Howard’s part, but he manages to intricately balance his diet by reducing carbs and adding loads and loads of lean protein. He even uses healthy fats like olive oil and takes 2% reduced-fat milk to stay in tip-top shape.
Skipping overrated caffeine
We all love our cup of coffee, and most of us would probably fight over it. But Dr. Howard doesn’t like to consume it. Not because he doesn't like the taste but because he believes other caffeinated beverages like tea are much better.
Drinking black and green tea has always been linked to numerous health benefits, but Dr. Howard’s experience is solid proof. Although he hasn’t abandoned coffee and drinks it occasionally, he has switched to the less popular caffeine beverages and consumes them regularly.
Love is in the air
Dr. Howard has been with his wife for 66 years and dotes on her every single day. Whether it’s bringing her flowers, reading her poems, or simply lending an ear, his efforts to manage his relationship have kept him away from the Grim Reaper.
How? Well, actively communicating with his wife reduces fights and strife, so the two remain in a good mood, heavily reducing stress and depression. And this doesn’t just apply to romantic relationships but even works with friends and family members.
