Living the American dream isn't that easy. Although many cities in the United States offer a vibrant culture, bustling lifestyle, and unimaginable benefits, they're also overshadowed by certain challenges.
Unfortunately, several cities struggle with high rates of violence, ranging from minor misdemeanors to significant offenses. Understandably, most of us would prefer to avoid living in such cities. Let's take a closer look at the most violent cities in America in 2024:

St. Louis, Missouri
St. Louis, Missouri, holds the unfortunate distinction of having the highest violent crime rate in the United States. As of 2024, the city recorded a violent crime rate of 2,082 incidents per 100,000 residents, cementing its status as one of the most dangerous cities in America.
The battle against violence in St. Louis is not a recent development. In the year 2017 alone, the city witnessed the tragic loss of 205 lives to murder, translating to a murder rate of 64.9 per 100,000 people. This persistent surge in violence underscores the urgent need for innovative reforms aimed at curbing the city's escalating crime rates.
Detroit, Michigan
Detroit's ongoing struggle with a high crime rate has positioned it as the second-most dangerous city. But this issue is far from new, with its roots extending back far beyond recent decades.
The city has faced an alarmingly high incidence of violent crimes, with a reported rate of 2,057 per 100,000 people. These statistics reflect a distressing reality for the residents of Detroit, encompassing a wide range of violent offenses, including murder, rape, robbery, and assault.
Baltimore, Maryland
Living in a Baltimore neighborhood is as distressing as convenient. The city has seen some of the highest rates of assault and robbery. The chances of becoming a victim of crime in Baltimore are, unfortunately, higher than in other cities.
The city recorded 348 homicides in 2019 alone. In 2024, the crime rate has not improved, with 2,027 incidents per 100,000 people.
Memphis, Tennessee
Living in Memphis is challenging since its high crime rate makes thriving difficult. The city has been plagued with a higher-than-usual violent crime rate, with 2,003 incidents happening per 100,000 people.
Common causes include; a higher poverty rate, economic imbalance, a substantial gang presence, and a struggle to control such situations. Sadly, Memphis experiences one of the highest homicide rates and is a continuous hub for drug-related activities.
Little Rock, Arkansas
Situated just along the Arkansas River, Little Rock is one of the few capital cities that experiences a high crime rate of 1,634 per 100,000 people.
In 2022 alone, crime rates in Little Rock increased to 17% compared to 2021. Tragically, its violent streak includes multiple offenses, including battery and homicides.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Milwaukee, a city in Wisconsin, is among the most violent cities in the U.S., with 1,597 violent incidents per 100,000 people.
The major crimes happening in this city include homicide, robbery, and assault. The police force of Milwaukee is trying its best to control the increasing crime rate, especially homicide, which is supposedly happening as a result of violence and conflict.
Rockford, Illinois
Rockford has been battling a high crime rate for several years. The violent crime rate in the city in 2024 is 1,588, and the total population is 144,949.
Rockford has a higher number of individual violent counts compared to other cities in Illinois. Multiple contributors, including socioeconomic imbalance, unequal distribution of resources, and an overall penchant for targeting impoverished areas, directly affect the crime rate.
Cleveland, Ohio
The second largest community in Ohio, Cleveland, is grappling with high crime rates, which drastically impact living conditions in the city.
Common misdemeanors are the least of Cleveland’s worries; the city is only safer than 1% of all U.S. neighborhoods and has some of the highest violent and property crime rates in Ohio. Cleveland’s crime rate in 2024 is 1,557 per 100,000 people.
Stockton, California
Although California has a lower crime rate than other states, the city of Stockton experiences the highest in the state (1,415 per 100,000 people).
The most common crime in Stockton is property-related, although violent crimes take place too. California authorities’ attempts to hash it out have shown improvements - which is evident compared to the crime rate in other cities of the U.S.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
The city of Albuquerque has also been experiencing violence for years, with 1,369 incidents happening per 100,000 people in 2024.
Albuquerque’s main problem is its high robbery, assault, and murder rates, which dramatically impact living conditions. Property crimes are also one of the highest in Albuquerque.
Springfield, Missouri
The city of Springfield might not strike you as a crime-stricken area thanks to its relatively high education status as home to Missouri State University, but it still makes the list.
Although the city has seen improvement in crime, it still grapples with major crimes, including assault and theft. A smaller but significant portion of the crime rate, which is 1,339 per 100,000, includes sexual assault, which undoubtedly makes Springfield an area of concern for most citizens and tourists.
Indianapolis, Indiana
We must remember that the violent crime rate is just a smaller portion of the issues that implicate a city, much like Indianapolis's relationship with crime.
This city in Indiana also experienced a high crime rate of 1,334 incidents per 100,000 in 2024. The city is actively trying to fight its crime rate and has also committed funds to address the root causes of violence.
