New year, new donut, and Dunkin' is serving up its very own Golden Chocolate Classic Donut to kick off the month of January. It rolled out this week, and after seeing it all over social media, it was a must-try.
Dunkin' lists the donut as a yeast-filled donut with a Golden Fudge filling, topped with crushed toffee pieces and chocolate icing. With a description like that, it quickly became a must-try candidate for a closer look and an honest taste test.

Where to purchase
The newly released donut should be at any Dunkin'. It can be ordered at the restaurant or through the drive-thru for pickup. It was $2.49 plus tax at my store. This is one of the higher-priced donuts, as they typically range from $1.00 - $2.89. Prices can vary by location.
Since it's a winter rollout, it's likely a limited-time menu item. Act quickly to purchase and try.
Appearance
It's a beautiful donut. The toppings were generous, the chocolate glaze covered the entire top of the donut, and it appeared to be fried to a perfectly golden-brown finish.
The weight of the donut was also hefty. It was about palm-sized, making it a good portion for multiple bites or to split in half.

Taste
Thoughts were all over the place after taking the first bite. The donut was soft and springy, like fried donuts typically are, but the topping was loaded with hard bits of sweet toffee, making it extra crunchy.
Then, factor in the sweet filling and the chocolate glaze, and there really was a lot going on. The next bite, our minds calmed a bit and were able to process the textures and flavors.

The soft donut is good. The sweet filling doesn't taste like fudge or chocolate. It has a stronger salted caramel flavor. Dunkin' does call the filling a "golden fudge", so that could be a play on words for them to basically call it caramel by another name.
The toffee bits on top are really hard because they literally are broken pieces of toffee. If you're a fan of multiple textures in one bite, you'll love it. If you're sensitive to crunchy textures, it might affect you.
With the toppings and filling, this donut is really sweet. There wasn't any processed or chemical taste, which was nice, but there was just a very high level of sweetness. According to the nutrition facts, one donut has 350 calories, 50 grams of carbs, 28 grams of sugar, and 5 grams of protein.
Texture
This winter release donut has all the textures. The top is super crunchy, the donut itself is super soft, and the middle is thick and creamy.
There was a generous amount of filling in the middle of the donut, and it was smooth. No grainy texture, and it had a really nice aftertaste as well. The filling was our favorite part overall.

The donut itself was quite nice, but the toffee on top threw off the texture balance. The toffee is like broken candy, with some pieces bigger than others.
Would you buy it again
While all the flavors meshed well, the crunchy toffee topping was the reason we wouldn't buy it again. When it comes to donuts, the soft texture and filling are spot on, but the hard pieces on top were too stark a contrast. It would be a purchase again if the toffee pieces weren't on it, as the filling was excellent.
For those who enjoy bold texture changes and candy-like crunch, this donut could be a hit. For others who prefer a more cohesive donut experience, it may be a one-time try rather than a repeat order.
