We all like a great cup of coffee, but commercial airlines hardly offer anything better than barely drinkable, warm, dark water. A bad experience, or maybe curiosity, drove a barista to brew his own up in the sky.
It was a routine moment that can feel surprisingly mesmerizing when it unfolds in an unexpected place, and this is exactly why this recent video went viral online.
The viral video
A TikTok video posted by coffee enthusiast Ozan Cetinkaya shows him doing something most airline passengers would never attempt: making a fresh espresso while seated on a commercial flight.
The clip begins with Cetinkaya opening a small bag of coffee beans and pouring them into a handheld grinder. After grinding the beans, he carefully packs the grounds into a portable espresso maker and makes a small cup of espresso while sitting by the airplane window.
Text on the video reads “POV: Making espresso at 35,000 feet,” highlighting the unusual setting for what is normally a café ritual.
The short clip quickly gained attention online, drawing millions of views as viewers watched a full espresso-making routine unfold mid-flight.

The reactions
The unusual moment quickly sparked debate online, with viewers split between admiration and annoyance. Some people found the idea clever, while others saw the act as unnecessary or disruptive in the tight quarters of an airplane cabin.
One person jokingly said, "Next time I fly, I’ll bring my portable BBQ and grill up some steaks." Can you imagine if everyone just started bringing their appliances on a plane? Not really gonna happen, but still funny to think about.
Another wrote, "If I smell freshly brewed espresso on my flight and I don’t get any I will crash out." True. Next time he needs to make sure that he brings enough to share with everyone on the flight.
This person wrote, "Brother just drink the coffee they give you." It would be easier, wouldn't it? But not nearly as fun. Or delicious.

Airline rules and coffee
Is a passenger actually allowed to do something like this on a commercial flight? In general, airlines prohibit passengers from using appliances that generate heat or draw significant power during a flight. That means items like electric kettles and other cooking devices are typically not allowed in the cabin. These restrictions are in place to prevent fire hazards and protect the aircraft’s electrical systems.
However, portable coffee setups like the one shown in the video often operate differently. Many travel espresso makers are completely manual or battery-powered. Some use hand pumps or compressed air to force hot water through the coffee grounds, while others rely on preheated water brought in insulated containers.
Because they do not plug into the aircraft or generate heat on their own, they can fall into a gray area rather than being outright prohibited.
Transportation Security Administration rules also allow passengers to bring coffee beans and ground coffee through security checkpoints.
That said, airline policies can vary, and flight crews ultimately have discretion over what activities are appropriate during a flight. If a setup is noisy or could disturb nearby passengers, crew members may ask someone to stop.

Why this matters
At first glance, a person making espresso on a plane might seem like a small or even humorous moment. But the strong reactions online show how quickly everyday travel experiences can become conversation starters when someone breaks the usual routine.
Air travel is one of the most structured environments people experience. Passengers follow strict rules about what they can bring and do during a flight. Food and drinks are typically limited to what airlines serve or what travelers bring. Seeing someone recreate a café-style ritual in that setting stands out precisely because it challenges those expectations.
The video also reflects a broader trend in how people approach food and drinks today. Coffee culture has expanded far beyond simply grabbing a cup on the way to work. Many enthusiasts now travel with their own brewing equipment, experiment with specialty beans, and treat coffee preparation as a hobby or craft. For those, the idea of making espresso mid-flight felt creative and impressive rather than unusual.
At the same time, the mixed reactions highlight an ongoing conversation about shared spaces. Airplanes place strangers in very close quarters for hours at a time, which can make even small behaviors feel amplified. Something as simple as grinding coffee beans or setting up brewing equipment could feel entertaining to some but distracting to others.
Moments like this tend to spread quickly online because they sit right at the intersection of curiosity and relatability. Nearly everyone has been on a flight, and most people are familiar with the ritual of making coffee. When those two everyday experiences collide in an unexpected way, it gives people something easy to debate.
