Tax Day can feel like a hit to your wallet, but one chain is trying to soften the blow in a way that leans a little more… edible.
Subway is rolling out a limited-time promotion tied directly to April 15, offering customers a chance at what it’s calling a “refund”, no paperwork required.

A Tax Day deal with a twist
From now through April 28th, Subway has a Buy One, Get One free footlong deal when customers use the promo code FLBOGO through the app or online ordering system. That part alone is a solid incentive for anyone already planning a sandwich run.
But the real hook comes with a lottery-style bonus.
On April 15, 1,040 randomly selected Sub Club members who use that same code will receive a free footlong coupon dropped directly into their account. The number isn’t random. It’s a nod to the 1040 tax form most Americans file each year.
"Tax Day can be tough, especially for folks who are getting a bill this year instead of a break when they need it most," said Dave Skena, Chief Marketing Officer, North America. "Whether you are using our Buy One Get One Free footlong* offer or are one of the 1,040 footlong 'refund' recipients, we hope a freshly made, handcrafted and delicious sandwich from Subway provides some relief."
Who can actually get the “refund”
There are a few specifics to keep in mind.
You’ll need to be a Sub Club member and place your order through the Subway app or website. The deal doesn’t apply to third-party delivery services, and not every sandwich is eligible for the BOGO portion.
The “refund” itself is also limited to those 1,040 winners, so it’s more of a surprise bonus than a guaranteed freebie.
Why brands keep tapping into Tax Day
Tax Day promotions have become increasingly common, especially as brands look for ways to connect with customers during a moment that’s universally… not fun.
Even if someone is getting money back from the IRS, rising everyday costs mean that the refund often gets absorbed quickly. That’s part of what this campaign is playing into. Offering a small, immediate reward instead of waiting weeks for a bank deposit.

The bigger picture
This isn’t just about free sandwiches. It’s part of a broader push from fast-casual chains to lean into app-based loyalty programs and limited-time digital offers.
By tying the promotion to Sub Club membership and app ordering, Subway is doing two things at once: driving immediate traffic and building a longer-term customer base it can reach directly.

For customers, it’s a relatively easy win. If you were already planning to grab lunch, using the code could mean getting a second sandwich free, and possibly scoring an extra one later.
Tax Day isn’t getting any easier, but brands are finding creative ways to make it feel a little less painful. In this case, it might come down to timing your sandwich order just right and hoping your “refund” shows up as a footlong instead of a form.
