Just because a food is marketed as “healthy” doesn’t mean it’s actually good for you. Many so-called nutritious options are packed with hidden sugars, unhealthy fats, and processed ingredients that can do more harm than good. From trendy snacks to diet staples, some of these foods might be secretly working against your health goals. While they may seem like smart choices, a closer look reveals a different story. Here are 17 popular “health” foods that may not be as wholesome as they appear.

Gluten-free Cookies

Gluten-free cookies are great for people who have a gluten allergy. But for regular people who can easily digest gluten, there is really no benefit to eating these cookies.
While gluten-free cookies are delicious, they’re generally kept at a higher-than-market price to keep the money rolling. They’re much cheaper to make at home, which only adds to the pain.
Veggie Straws

Okay, it’s kind of our fault for falling for this. Veggie straws were initially introduced as a healthier way to snack, but ever since they picked up the hype, they’ve managed to ruin the experience.
Now, these healthy snacks are loaded with preservatives and harmful artificial flavoring that are just a disappointing mark for those of us who just want to eat healthy and tasty in one go.
Agave-Sweetened Products

Agave has been praised for its low glycemic index, which is why many brands have included it in their products. However, they don’t use agave to help us nutritionally but to make their products even more desirable.
So, while they contain agave, they also contain other harmful preservatives and additives we usually try to avoid.
Vitamin Water

Again, this one is entirely on us because how could we fall for such a stupid idea? We cannot verify if certain vitamin waters have the nutritional content we’d prefer, and it’s ridiculously expensive.
Water has almost no nutrients, so the only way to make vitamin water is by adding fruit/flavor with vitamins. However, vitamin water sellers rely on artificial flavoring instead, tricking us into drinking plain-colored water.
Plant-Based Ice Creams

Once more, greed takes a great idea to the stupidest heights. Plant-based ice creams started off as a great alternative for people with allergies, lactose intolerance, or a general food preference.
But now, they’re no longer true to their promise and are filled with harmful additives and artificial sweeteners. They’re also no longer as delicious, so we’re just throwing our money down the drain with this one.
Detox Teas

Detox teas might just be the biggest example of how easy it is to create credibility without evidence. It gained popularity because of purifying diets, and now they’re forever going to haunt us with their painful price tags.
Detox teas might sound like they’re doing something, but in reality, our bodies and metabolism are doing the work. This is why detox teas might work for some and won’t work for others.
Low-Sugar Cereals

Fooling people who are just trying to look out for themselves is a new low. And yet, low-sugar cereals exist, and yes, these are as deceptive as they can get. Most low-sugar cereals are highly processed and contain additives.
But that’s not even the biggest concern. Such cereals use artificial sweeteners, which can be dangerous even if used in smaller quantities. So the more we eat these, the greater the harm to our bodies.
Natural Fruit Snacks

We all saw the rise in natural fruit snacks because of various dieting regimens. What we didn’t see was companies jumping on the bandwagon to fool us into eating the most idiotic snacks under the premise of being healthy.
While fruit snacks brand themselves as healthy because they’re made with fruit puree, most brands dilute the naturalness by adding heaps of preservatives, artificial flavoring, and sweeteners.
Low-Carb Bread

Just because something is low-carb doesn’t mean it’s also healthy. Yes, low-carb foods may help us to some extent, but such products often lack the nutritional balance we need to survive.
Low-carb bread doesn’t taste good and offers no particular nutritional benefit. This is probably why its inventor is swimming in his vault of gold coins and laughing at our naivety.
Slimming Teas

Easily the worst food-related marketing scam, slimming teas should have never existed. Not only did they foster unhealthy relationships with food, but they also severely impacted our health because of their unique nutritional profile.
Speaking of which, slimming teas hold no such value. They may boost your metabolism for a short while, but their preference for some nutrients over others just creates a deficit that we pay for with our health and our wallet.
Protein Water

Simpletons like us who just wanted quick gains at the gym were roped into buying protein water, which in hindsight, is as stupid as it sounds. Protein water is just bottled tapped water infused with proteins, but its nutritional profile is just meh.
They may be a good source of protein, but they lack any other nutrients that could contribute to a healthy diet. It doesn’t help that most of us rely on them too much, so we put a dent in our wallets.
Granola Bars

Granola bars look healthy with all those oats, nuts, and berries inside the bar. But you know what else is in a granola bar? Tons and tons of sugar. Granola bars are packed with high fructose corn syrup, the worst kind of artificial sugar out there. All that sugar negates the positive side of a granola bar and makes it something to completely avoid.
Canned Soup

Soup may sound like a nutritious, healthy meal, and it very well can be. You will have a healthy meal if you make your own soup from scratch at home and load it with veggies and low-sodium broth.
But if you just buy that salt-filled fake soup at the grocery store, you will not eat well. Canned soup is very often high in sodium and other unnatural preservatives that you should try to avoid
Artificial Sweeteners

Many people try to avoid eating too much sugar, but replacing that natural sugar with an artificial sweetener may not be the best idea. Many sweeteners have been linked to weight gain, poor gut health, and even bad blood sugar control. They are not as good as they may seem.
Energy Drinks

A nice, natural way to boost your energy levels would be so nice. Just don't think you will find that in a bottled energy drink from the grocery store. All that is inside those bottles is sugar (or fake sugar), chemicals, and food coloring. You may get a boost of energy, but it is not natural, and it is definitely not healthy.
Smoothies

If you go and grab a smoothie at a local smoothie stand, you probably think you are getting something very nutritious. In fact, you are getting a big glass of sugar. Smoothies are loaded with extra sugars and sometimes even corn syrup. They contain way more calories than you may think and are not even that nutritious. Skip the smoothies if you really want to eat a healthy diet.
Protein Bars

You may look at a protein bar and think that it will bring you instant energy and fill you up as if it were a meal. However, protein bars are not all they are cracked up to be. In fact, many protein bars out there have more carbs than candy bars. All that sugar is not good for you at all.
Plus, protein bars are made with tons of artificial ingredients. Make sure you check the label of your protein bar so you know what you are really putting into your body.
