A new study took a deep look into how US adults snack and why we make certain choices when it comes to our snacks.
I am definitely a big snacker. I have a few snacks that are always on the top of my go-to list and ones that I can't live without. I admit that I never thought too much about my snack preferences and why I choose certain snacks over others, but a recent study from YouGov has me completely fascinated by how US adults pick what snacks to have and which snacks are the most popular.
Want to learn a little bit more about what makes some snacks popular and what foods are at the top of the snack hierarchy? You are about to learn all the interesting facts about snacking that you never knew you needed to know!

Snack Preferences
Everyone has their favorite snacks. I'm definitely a salty snacker, reaching for chips and crackers before I go for the candy and chocolate. Apparently, most adults in the US are just like me, as the YouGov study shows that 71% of Americans go for the salty snack first!
But don't discount those sweet snacks completely, as 70% of Americans say they also indulge in sweets regularly. Included in these sweet snacks is fruit, which a solid 47% of Americans say they snack on every day. That means nearly half of us are peeling bananas, slicing apples, or popping grapes as part of our daily routine. Fruit is typically a very easy and delicious snack that also makes us feel like we're making good choices.

Right behind popular fruit as a snack, we have veggies, with 38% of people eating them daily as a snack. If you've ever crunched on baby carrots, dipped celery into hummus, or snacked on cherry tomatoes straight from the fridge, you're part of the veggie-loving crowd.
But we all know that fruit and veggies aren't the only snacks on the block. Classic indulgences like chips, candy, chocolate, and crackers remain extremely popular, with about 38% to 39% of adults eating these types of snacks on a weekly basis. And who doesn't love a good salty crunch or a sweet bite of chocolate after a long day? There's something deeply satisfying about tearing into a bag of chips or unwrapping a piece of candy, and clearly, millions of us agree.
Flavor Combinations and Popular Pairings
Snacking isn't just what we choose to eat, but it's also about how the flavors of those snacks come together to create that perfect, satisfying food. Based on this study, Americans are getting pretty creative when it comes to flavor pairings with snack foods.
It is not very surprising that the sweet and smoky combination of flavors is the winner, with 61% of people loving mixes like BBQ and brown sugar or chipotle and maple. If you've ever had smoky BBQ chips with a hint of sweetness, you know exactly why this combo works so well. It's bold, complex, and downright addictive.

Savory and herbal blends, like rosemary and sea salt or basil and parmesan, are a favorite of 54% of people who are all into these earthy, aromatic pairings. There's something incredibly satisfying about a snack that feels both indulgent and sophisticated at the same time.
Now, we also need to look at the more adventurous snack territory: sweet and umami pairings. Have you ever had soy caramel or miso and maple? If not, you're missing out because 39% of Americans love this combo. The richness of umami with a hint of sweetness creates an unexpected but totally delicious snacking experience.
Finally, we need to mention the spicy and fruity lovers. 38% of people enjoy combinations like sriracha and pineapple or watermelon and chili. And, if you've ever had mango with Tajín, you already know how ridiculously good this duo can be. The heat amplifies the fruitiness, making each bite exciting and mouthwatering.
It is amazing how certain flavor combinations can make us want to choose a specific snack. But there are a few other things that go into our snack choices that we need to mention. Who knew snacking was so complex?!
Major Influences in Snack Choices
Now that we know what people are snacking on and which flavors people crave, let's look at the other factors that actually influence these choices.
First and foremost, flavor reigns supreme. A whopping 78% of people say taste is the #1 reason they choose a snack. If something doesn't taste good, why would we bother eating it? No matter how healthy or trendy a snack is, if it doesn't satisfy our craving for a yummy snack, it's just not worth it.
But you may be surprised to learn that flavor isn't everything. 58% of snackers care about ingredients, meaning they're taking a closer look at what's actually inside their snacks. Some people may be trying to avoid artificial additives, looking for organic options, or just wanting to recognize the ingredients on the label. The bottom line is that more people are making informed choices about what they're putting into their bodies and really assessing the ingredients in every snack.

For 48% of people, nutritional value matters too. Protein content, fiber, or avoiding too much sugar could all be possible concerns, and a growing number of snackers want their choices to come with at least some health benefits. People want to feel good about what they eat and not just mindlessly munch.
And don't forget about the power of recommendation! 32% of people choose snacks based on what their friends, family, or influencers suggest. Instagram influencers, TikTok stars, and just your neighbors down the street all influence what you choose to eat. And people love recommendations! They definitely impact what ends up in our snack cabinets.
The Bottom Line on Snacking
Snacking is a very personal choice, but there are some clear trends and reasons behind what we eat. Maybe you're a fruit-every-day kind of person, a die-hard chip fan, or someone who can't resist trying out the latest flavor craze. No matter what type of snacker you are, if you are an adult in the US, snacks are likely a huge part of your daily routine.
