I used to think I was eating pretty well—granola bars, flavored yogurts, “healthy” snacks from the store. But when I started paying closer attention, I realized some of those everyday foods weren’t doing me any favors. They might look harmless, even healthy, but they can quietly get in the way of your progress. These foods aren’t the worst things you could eat, but there are much better options out there. Small swaps can make a big difference when you know what to look for.

Processed cheese

Cheese can absolutely be part of a healthy diet—especially when it’s made the traditional way. But processed cheese is a different story. It’s often packed with additives and doesn’t offer the same quality or flavor as the real thing. While a little now and then won’t hurt, it’s worth keeping in mind that processed cheese is usually high in sodium and fat. If you have better options, it might be time to upgrade your cheese choice.
Energy bars

Surprised to see this on the list?
Energy bars can be healthy, but unfortunately, most of them are just a marketing scam.
Yes, there are many that are nutritious. But most energy bars contain a lot of sweeteners, which defeats the whole point. It’s better to make energy bars at home with ingredients you trust.
Ice creams

We’re not shocked; we’re just hurt.
Ice cream is one of our favorite desserts, so learning that it’s bad for us is like taking a hit to the heart.
Store-bought ice creams may contain many artificial flavorings and fake sugars, like erythritol, which can be dangerous if overeaten. However, not all ice cream is bad. Homemade ice creams are a healthy snack if you use natural sweeteners.
Sweet rolls

Okay, this is getting a bit hard.
Sweet rolls/buns are one of the most popular bakery snacks, and we don’t have to talk much about why. Everyone knows they are delicious.
But they’re just loaded with all the wrong nutrients. They have an unnaturally high carb and sugar content and don’t really balance the scales with other nutrients, so it’s best to avoid them. Try this homemade brioche instead.
Microwave popcorns

This is a shocker, right?
Microwave popcorn has been a common household snack for so long that it’s impossible to believe it’s bad for you.
But unlike what you think, it’s not the microwave aspect that makes them bad, but the copious amounts of sodium, additives, and fake flavors that most popcorn brands use. Stick to the plain popcorn kernels cooked on the stovetop rather than those bags of terrible ingredients.
Deli meats

Most processed meats can be bad.
But deli meat is easily one of the worst. Not only is it highly processed, but it’s also made with tons and tons of sodium.
Almost all deli meats have extremely high sodium content. Plus, they are often left sitting out at room temperature, something that will cause them to spoil quickly. And maybe I’m crazy, but why take the risk with salmonella?
Corn syrup

Not many of us realize how common this syrup is. It is in everything.
High-fructose corn syrup is a basic ingredient in most processed food, and that should tell you how dangerous it can be.
This specific syrup, made from corn starch, has been linked to unnatural blood sugar level spikes, issues with insulin resistance, and other metabolic problems. Some even suggest it has a potential connection to heart problems.
White bread

Surprised to see this staple?
White bread is made from extremely refined flour, so it lacks basic nutrients extracted from grains that our body needs.
It also doesn’t help that white bread contains little to no fiber, which can worsen metabolic conditions. If you have to eat bread, look for whole-grain wheat bread rather than overly processed white bread.
Margarine

Ironically, margarine isn’t as healthy as we think.
This butter substitute may contain trans fats, which can raise cholesterol levels in the body.
While some margarines are made without trans fats, you never know for sure if they’re healthy. Overeating margarine can lead to high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, and even obesity. It's best to skip it completely.
Crackers

Why does every good-tasting thing have to be bad?
Crackers are easily one of the most versatile and tasty snacks because they pair well with most dips and sauces and are extremely delicious.
But most crackers are made with refined grains, removing all healthy nutrients. To top it off, they’re mixed with high levels of sodium, which can be extremely dangerous for us.
Fast Food

Fast food is generally very unhealthy. It is typically high in calories, loaded with salt, and full of saturated fats. Many fast foods have almost no nutritional value at all!
You should try to avoid fast food, as a whole, for many reasons. Eating homemade food is just so much better for you, and it tastes better, too!
Sugary Cereal

You may think that cereal is an easy and nutritious breakfast. However, it can be pretty bad for you, too. Many cereals are loaded with sugar—some have more sugar per serving than an average dessert!
Keep this in mind when you pour that morning bowl of cereal. It is just unhealthy carbs disguised in clever packaging.
Low Fat Salad Dressing

You may think grabbing a low-fat salad dressing bottle is a good idea. However, that dressing may be lower in fat but it is actually a lot higher in sugar and sodium than regular salad dressing.
Companies make up for the lack of flavor from the reduced fat by adding extra sugar and salt. The dressing actually ends up being worse for you than regular, full-fat dressing.
Fruit Juice

Recent studies have shown that fruit juice, even 100% natural juices, is pretty bad for your health. Drinking too much fruit juice will cause a rush of fructose into your liver. This can lead to long-term health issues like diabetes, cancer, and heart issues. Skip the juice and stick to classic, dependable water! You really can't go wrong with plain water.
