I once ordered a dish that looked amazing on the menu but showed up looking half-finished and tasted even worse. It’s one of those moments where you realize some restaurant items are more about presentation than real value. While eating out should feel like a treat, certain dishes consistently disappoint you. Some meals just aren’t worth the hype, no matter how fancy they sound. Keep an eye out so you don’t fall for the same overpriced traps.

Sushi at a buffet

Sushi is easily one of the most loved foods around. It’s fresh, flavorful, and always hits the spot. I know I start missing it if I go too long without it. But when you're trying to save time or money, it’s tempting to go for a sushi buffet instead of a proper sit-down meal. The problem is, buffet sushi often sits out too long or gets recycled, and it loses everything that makes sushi special. It just doesn’t compare to the taste of something made fresh, right in front of you.
Chicken fried steak

Chicken fried steak is a typical American delicacy known for the heap of gravy all over the fried chicken. It may just be one of the worst dishes you could eat. All that salty, fatty gravy just can't be good for you!
Plus, the steak is deep-fried, which you know is not good for you. Chicken fried steak is just a plate of unhealthy food that you should probably skip.
Shrimp scampi

If you’re hoping for a cheap dinner, you might want to skimp on the shrimp scampi because this dish is usually ridiculously overpriced.
But that’s not the only reason you shouldn't eat shrimp scampi. The shrimp used in the dish is often old, which may make you sick. Shrimp scampi is also pretty small. So, you are paying a high price for old, tiny shrimp. No, thank you.
Lobster bisque

Let’s admit it: lobster bisque is one of the most overrated foods in the world. Most of us only eat this dish because of nostalgia, but it really isn't worth it anymore.
Like shrimp scampi, lobster bisque is quite overpriced for its quality, so we feel disappointed after a tiny bit. It’s also loaded with fats and has a high calorie count, which can promote an unhealthy lifestyle. A lobster bisque just isn’t worth the effort or the attention.
Chicken nuggets

If there’s one dish in the world we all love, it has to be chicken nuggets. We can’t resist diving into a plate of chicken nuggets.
However, this devilishly good food isn’t as healthy as we think. Chicken nuggets are often made from the most unsavory parts of a chicken. They’re also deep-fried, making them pretty unhealthy.
Philly cheesesteak

Philly cheesesteaks might be delicious, but they’re also loaded with calories, fat, and salt. One sandwich can easily pack in more than an entire day’s worth of what your body needs. It’s the kind of meal that tastes great in the moment but often leaves you feeling heavy and regretful afterward. If you’re trying to eat smart or just avoid a food coma, this might be one to skip. There are plenty of other satisfying options that won’t hit quite as hard.
Onion rings

It’s pretty impressive how chefs turned a widely disliked vegetable into one of the most popular side dishes. Onion rings really are a crowd-pleaser when done right, crispy, golden, and satisfying. But ordering them at a restaurant isn’t always worth it. They’re often more breading than actual onion, and the flavor tends to fall flat. If you're hoping for something memorable, there are better sides to spend your money on.
Chili

Although we all love this American delight, it can be too much for us. Chili is loaded with spices. There are so many spices that they can be hard to handle. Some chilis are also super salty, which is another reason they can be hard to eat.
Crab cakes

Although crab cakes are among the most popular appetizers, they are among the least healthy foods.
Crab cakes are often made from leftover scraps or imitation crab meat. You usually get some pretty poor-quality meat. They are also costly for their small size. You should just skip them all together.
Cobb salad

It’s pretty surprising to see a typically healthy food on the list. What could be safer than a salad? Unfortunately, cobb salad is one of the worst foods you could order at a restaurant.
Cobb salad is also a calorie bomb, fooling people who want to eat light. Made with bacon, eggs, chicken, and tons of cheese, this one dish has just a lot going on. You won't be eating light when you order this salad.
Fish and Chips

It’s tough to resist getting fish and chips when you’re at a typically British eatery. But we might suggest taking a break. While fish and chips are among the tastiest dishes at eateries, they’re also among the worst.
The fish might be stale, but the batter covers its smell, so you might not realize it unless you get sick. Fish and chips are a greasy meal, so they’re not the best option for calorie-watchers.
Chicken Alfredo

Chicken alfredo or alfredo fettuccine pasta is one of the most popular dishes in any Italian eatery. Yet, don’t take the dish too seriously; it’s unauthentic and lacks quality control.
The chicken is often hours old and it’s unsually ridiculously priced, so it’s best to cook at home. Chicken Alfredo is exciting, but it’s not worth the purchase.
Grilled Cheese

Unless you are at a fancy grilled cheese-only restaurant, never, ever order a grilled cheese. It will be overpriced, taste boring, and leave you feeling hungry.
Grilled cheese from a restaurant is simply white bread with a slice of plain American cheese in the center. You could make this exact food at home for a fraction of the cost. Don't waste your money or calories eating restaurant grilled cheese.
Fruit Salad

Who knows when that restaurant fruit salad was made? It could have been sitting around for days! Fruit is only good when it is freshly cut and you just can't guarantee this to be true when you order it from a restaurant menu. You could be served old, mushy fruit salad or extremely underripe, bland fruit. Either way, it just won't be good.
Sprouts

Raw sprouts are frequently added to Asian dishes and vegan meals to provide a healthy crunch. However, sprouts must be stored at very cold temperatures to prevent them from shriveling or wilting.
When kept in warm conditions, the environment becomes perfect for breeding E. coli and other harmful bacteria. Many restaurants have ceased serving sprouts because they are often implicated in foodborne illnesses. It's best to avoid sprouts!
Breakfast Buffets

If a restaurant offers a breakfast buffet, you may want to skip it altogether. Breakfast buffets typically have very low-quality food with very high prices. Also, think about how much you will actually be eating.
Is it worth paying double for a full buffet, or should you just eat a regular menu item that is half the price? Buffets can be expensive, especially at breakfast. You are better off ordering from the main menu.
Fish of the Day

You may think that ordering the "fish of the day" will give you a fresh, delicious fish dinner. However, the opposite is usually true. Many restaurants have fish specials using fish that are about to expire.
Making the fish special is a way to use it quickly before spoiling. Ordering the fish of the day is a questionable decision. Just don't do it.
