Pumpkin spice season is back, and this year it is making its way to the interstate. Pilot, the nation’s largest network of travel centers, is rolling out new fall coffee flavors as part of its seasonal menu. The Knoxville-based company, operating in more than 900 locations across the United States, has also announced that it will offer a free coffee in celebration of National Coffee Day.
The offer
On Monday, September 29, guests can enjoy a free any-size hot coffee at participating Pilot, Flying J, and One9 locations in the U.S.
“This National Coffee Day, we’re treating our guests to a great cup of Pilot coffee,” said Sean Marrero, senior vice president of food and beverage. “With the addition of our fall flavors, plus a host of other creamers and customizable options, everyone can make each cup of Pilot coffee uniquely their own.”
The free coffee offer runs from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. EST on Sept. 29. To redeem the offer, you must save the reward in the Pilot app and present your myRewards card and barcode in the app at the time of purchase. If you don’t have any of these, you can share the phone number linked to your account. The promotion is limited to only one per customer at participating U.S. Pilot, Flying J, and One9 branded, owned, and/or operated locations.

What does pumpkin spice mean for Americans?
For many Americans, pumpkin spice flavor is the signal that fall has truly arrived. The first cool mornings, the crunch of leaves, and suddenly a Pumpkin Spice Latte in hand feels like a seasonal ritual. When Starbucks introduced the drink back in 2003, few could have predicted how quickly it would become a cultural marker. Today, pumpkin spice shows up everywhere. You will find it in muffins, breakfast cereals, ice cream, and even candles that make kitchens smell like freshly baked pie.
What makes it stick isn’t just the taste but the feeling it carries. Pumpkin spice is shorthand for comfort and a bit of seasonal magic. Commuters drink a latte at a gas station, while long-haul drivers sip one on the interstate, but all share the coziness. A blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves is enough to turn an ordinary cup of coffee into something sweet and cozy.
In that sense, pumpkin spice has become less about what’s in the cup and more about what it represents. It ties together food, memory, and community, reminding people that fall is here and the holidays aren’t far away. It’s a flavor, yes, but for many, it’s also a feeling, and that’s why America keeps coming back to it year after year.
Make your own
If you have some time and want to treat yourself, you can also make your own pumpkin spice latte at home. Heat milk with a spoon or two of pumpkin puree, your choice of sweetener, and pumpkin pie spice until warm but not boiling. Stir in vanilla, then whisk or blend until smooth. Pour the mixture over a shot of espresso or strong coffee, and top with whipped cream. Your delicious pumpkin-spiced latte is ready!
So, if you’re hitting the road today and want a cozy pick-me-up, there’s no better excuse to stop at a Pilot, Flying J, or One9 location. Redeem your free cup of coffee for National Coffee Day, explore the new seasonal flavors, and make the drive feel a little warmer — one sip at a time.
