Airplane food has always had a bad reputation. Tiny trays, soggy rolls, and sauces you can’t really name (unless you fly business or first class). Some travelers pack trail mix or a sandwich from home, while others just accept the little plastic-wrapped meal. But one passenger decided she was going to do better, and she did what we cannot even think of. She brought her own pasta and started rolling it out right there on the tray table. And that got people talking!
The story
Katie from the Buona Pasta Club literally made gnocchi from scratch while flying at 30,000 feet. She shared a video on her TikTok where she was seen holding up a plate of flour, adding water right in the middle, and mixing it all together to form a dough ball right there on her tray table.
Then she rolled the dough into four long sections and started cutting them into smaller pieces with a cutting tool (yes, even we are surprised how she managed to take it inside). She even had a gnocchi board with her to shape each piece properly. By the end of the video, she showed a full plate of perfectly formed gnocchi, though uncooked.
Her caption was: "POV: You hate airplane food, so you make it yourself.” She further added in the caption, “Anyone else?"
The thing that surprised people the most is that she didn’t cook it; she just rolled the dough and shared her creation. But technically, she could have just asked for hot water from the flight attendants and boom, fresh gnocchi. It's actually kind of genius when you think about it. The airplane crew heats up their food somehow, right?
The reactions
When this video went viral, people had a lot to say. And they really went off.
"And what did you do next? Ask for it to be heated in the microwave?"
This comment perfectly captures what everyone was thinking. Like, what was the purpose here? Just eating raw gnocchi?
Many people were curious to know about the airport security and how they let the flour inside the plane? One person commented, “How is this allowed, but my bottle of water isn't?"
Another person was annoyed by the mess it would make. They commented, "Imagine sitting next to this person, I'd be so mad they're getting flour everywhere while I'm trying to nap."
Fair point, honestly. If someone's trying to sleep and the passenger sitting next to them is basically running a pasta workshop, they could get annoyed. Airplane seats are cramped enough without someone cooking next to you.

"Just cook your food at home, bring it on the plane, and ask them to heat it up. Literally, I’ve done it a million times because I have stomach issues".
This person has the right idea. Make something good at home and just ask them to warm it up. It’s way more practical than trying to be a chef up in the air.
One person compared her with Nara Smith, "And I thought Nara Smith was over the top." This comparison is pretty funny. If you know, you know.
"So you don't want airplane food, to have your own raw, tasteless pasta? Yea, no, pass"
A few people were concerned about the health risks it could have, with one person adding, "Not a great idea. I'm sorry, but if coeliacs sit in the rows around you, they will not be happy with the flour flying around… and this is no joke, it is a real threat for them… please consider this when you think about cooking in a public space."
This comment brings up a really important point about people with celiac disease that probably didn't cross most people's minds. Flour particles in the air on a closed airplane could genuinely be dangerous for some passengers.
The takeaway

We agree, airplane food is bland, and everyone's looking for ways to make flying less miserable. Some people bring trail mix, while others pack boxes of cheese and crackers or whatever is convenient to carry. But, there's definitely something to be said for bringing your own food when you're stuck in a plane for hours.
This whole situation just shows how desperate people are for decent food when they travel. Nobody should have to choose between a mystery airplane "chicken or pasta" meal.
