DoorDash has announced an ‘emergency food response’ to help millions of Americans who are about to lose access to federal food aid in November. The company will provide 1 million free meals through food banks and waive delivery fees for about 300,000 grocery orders placed by SNAP recipients.

The launch comes amid a federal funding lapse that could interrupt benefits for more than 40 million people, including 21 million children and 5 million seniors. Food banks and community agencies have already reported that requests for assistance are rising sharply.
DoorDash stated that the initiative is meant to fill an urgent gap while lawmakers determine how to continue SNAP funding.
What does DoorDash’s emergency food response offer?
The company said its Emergency Food Response will begin Nov. 1 and continue through Nov. 30, 2025. It will include:

- Free meals for food banks: DoorDash will waive merchant fees for more than 300 Project DASH partners nationwide, totaling about 1 million free meals in November.
- Fee waivers for SNAP recipients: Families who have added an active SNAP/EBT card to their DoorDash account will have the delivery and service fee waived on one order during the month at participating stores, including Sprouts, Dollar General, Schnucks, Food Lion, Giant Foods, The GIANT Company, Hannaford, Stop & Shop, Hy-Vee, Giant Eagle, and Wegmans, although taxes, gratuities, and other charges may still apply.
- Food donations: DoorDash will also donate food and household items from DashMart locations to food banks in communities most affected by benefit cuts.
Max Rettig, DoorDash’s vice president and global head of public policy, said in the announcement that helping people access food remains a central part of the company’s mission. “Millions of families are worried right now about how they’ll put food on the table. Fighting hunger is core to our mission at DoorDash, and we’re stepping up alongside leading grocers and retailers to help bridge the gap,” Rettig said.
Eric Mitchell, president of the Alliance to End Hunger, said, “We know that the only viable solution is to ensure SNAP benefits are being delivered in full to those in need of food assistance as soon as possible”. He added, “We are thankful for the part that companies and organizations across the country like DoorDash can do to try to fill the gap.”
How can families use the offer?
Eligible families can take part in the DoorDash plan starting Nov. 1. To qualify:
- Link a valid SNAP/EBT card to the DoorDash account before making a purchase.
- Shop at a SNAP-participating grocery chain and use the promo code DoorDash will release by Nov. 1.
- Apply the code at checkout to remove delivery and service fees on one order placed between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30.
Only one discounted order will be available per eligible user. DoorDash may adjust or end the promotion at any time without notice.
Households can also receive free meal deliveries through their local Project DASH food-bank partners. DoorDash works with more than 300 community organizations that will distribute donated or delivered food as part of this response. Families should monitor their state SNAP offices for updates. The DoorDash program is supplemental and does not replace federal benefits.
What is Project Dash?

Project DASH is an initiative launched by DoorDash in 2018 that helps food banks, pantries, and community agencies deliver meals and essentials to people who face barriers to accessing food due to transportation or mobility issues.
Through Project DASH, DoorDash works with local food banks and community groups to decide who needs help and how deliveries are arranged. Dashers pick up food or essentials and bring them straight to people’s homes, just like any regular DoorDash order. Recipients also get text updates so they know when their delivery is on the way.
Since its inception, the program has completed more than 8 million deliveries, totaling over 135 million meals delivered to families in the United States.
What is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) & why is it at risk?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the nation’s largest federal nutrition program, administered by USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) and state agencies. SNAP provides monthly benefits that low-income households can use to buy food such as fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, bread, and other necessities at authorized retailers.
According to the USDA, about 41.7 million people received benefits each month during fiscal year 2024 alone. The average monthly benefit per participant was $187.20.
The USDA has stated that it does not have sufficient funds to issue November 2025 SNAP payments if the federal government remains shut down. Without new appropriations, states would have to halt benefit transfers to the vendors, as the USDA stated in a letter to Regional and SNAP directors.
Unless Congress passes legislation to reopen the federal government and restore funding, nearly 42 million recipients will not receive their November allotments.
DoorDash’s program is meant to help families and communities who may be struggling to afford food during the government shutdown and SNAP cutoff. Removing delivery costs and helping food banks reach more people makes it a little easier for households to get the groceries and meals they need without extra financial pressure.
In these difficult times, programs like this provide short-term relief for millions who might otherwise struggle to put food on the table.
