On March 10, homeowner Britney Smith watched as a 78-year-old DoorDasher struggled to climb the stairs on her porch while delivering a Starbucks drink she had ordered for her daughter.
The moment stuck with her. Concerned about why someone his age was still working delivery jobs, Smith shared the experience on Facebook along with a short video and a message asking for help identifying him.
"Help me find this precious man! Why is he having to Door Dash?"

Her post quickly spread online, and before long someone recognized the elderly man. His name was Richard Pulley.
Once Smith learned who he was, she decided to visit him in person. She went to Pulley’s home and handed him a $200 cash tip as a thank-you for the delivery.
Richard was surprised by the gesture. "That was really great. I've never gotten one that big."
But Smith still had a question she wanted answered. Before leaving, she asked him directly why he was still working delivery jobs.
Pulley explained that he had recently returned to work after his wife lost her job. He said he had no choice but to go back to work.
Smith later shared that he never complained about the situation and seemed positive despite the circumstances. Still, the encounter stayed with her. "It was just so heavy on my heart all night."
She later learned there was an even deeper reason Pulley needed the extra income. His wife suffers from kidney disease, and the cost of her medications has made their financial situation more difficult.
Wanting to help, Smith decided to take the next step. She created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Pulley and his family. The response was immediate and overwhelming.
Within just a few days of posting the video and launching the fundraiser, donations began pouring in from people who had seen the story online. The campaign quickly climbed into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As of this week, the GoFundMe has raised more than $940,000, putting it well on the way toward its $1 million goal.
Smith says she never expected the story to resonate with so many people. "I'm speechless. There's no way I imagined that it would grow into this."
For Pulley, the sudden support has been life-changing. He admitted that before the fundraiser, he had been worried about coming up with just a few hundred dollars to cover bills. "I was worried about getting $600 to pay a loan," he said.
Pulley is grateful for Smith’s kindness and for the thousands of strangers who chose to help. "In just three days, she's turned the world around for me."
The reactions
Stories like this prove that there is always more good and kindness in the world than sometimes social media likes to portray.
One person pointed out, "Senior citizens don't deserve this." It's true. They've worked hard all their lives and are still working because so many things are unaffordable. It doesn't feel fair.
Another wrote, "Internet showing the kindness that the world needs!" The internet can often come through in really big and amazing ways.
Someone else said, "We need more good souls like her in this world." It's simply amazing that she went out of her way to find him and help him. So many others would have likely given up or not given it another thought. Everyone can learn a thing or two from her kindness.
This is adorable. "An adopted Grandpa.. bless his heart.. so precious." She absolutely has a new adopted Grandpa after this.

Why this matters
A growing number of older adults continue working well past retirement age, often not by choice but because rising living costs and medical expenses leave them with few alternatives.
Richard Pulley’s situation reflects a challenge faced by many families caring for loved ones with serious health conditions. Medical treatments and daily expenses can quickly add up, even for people who have spent decades working and planning for retirement.
The response to his story shows how quickly communities can come together when people feel moved to help.
It's also lovely to see that small moments of kindness can ripple outward. Britney Smith’s decision to ask a simple question and take action sparked a chain reaction that changed one family’s circumstances almost overnight.
