You might think having a drink is harmless, but the truth is more complicated. Alcohol can quietly impact your body, your mood, your relationships, and your ability to make good decisions. What starts out as a social habit can lead to long-term problems that are easy to overlook. If you've ever wondered whether it's time to cut back or quit entirely, this might be the push you need. You might just rethink that drink after reading this.

Getting bigger

According to some sources, alcohol inhibits the body’s fat-burning capacity, which means it accumulates as much fat as possible.
Alcohol also boosts hunger because, by the time you’re chugging your third shot, your stomach begins growling for actual food. This leads to intense cravings for greasy and salty foods, which you can’t help but consume.
In the end, alcohol begins a perpetual cycle where you're shoving fistfuls of food while being unable to digest the fat, leading to unwanted weight gain.
Say hello to trauma

There are many who drink to suppress traumatic experiences. And while that is a valid reason to drink alcohol, it’s also one to not.
Suppressing your emotions by drinking will only keep them bottled up for a while, and once your body stops keeping up with the pressure, it’ll cause a massive mental blowout. Instead, practicing healthy measures like therapy, meditation, and yoga is better.
Leads to temptation

We may not agree with the olden times, but they were right about one thing: alcohol opens a doorway to other temptations. This doesn’t mean alcohol will always result badly or that every habit is bad. But people open up to trying new things, which may not be the best idea (because, you know, harmful drugs and all).
But when you stop drinking, you open up to various healthy activities.
You make dumb decisions

This one’s unsurprising, considering we’ve all tried stupid things when drunk. But constantly drinking alcohol will impair your judgment to the point you can’t even differentiate between right and wrong. And that’s when things go haywire. It’s very easy to switch decisions, and things can become very dangerous when impulses overcome rationality.
So maybe stop while you can and develop your gut instincts because, unlike alcohol, we really need those.
Hurt loved ones

A heartbreaking truth about alcohol is that it might feel amazing to us, but awful to everyone around us. Booze turns us into a different version of ourselves, one that we might not approve of.
To make matters worse, when we spiral into nothingness, it’s not us who get hurt the most, but beloved friends and family who have to see us suffer.
It’s much easier to let go of the booze and embrace your loved ones.
Addictive

Lastly, it’s obvious that alcohol has addictive properties. It’s easy to become hooked on alcohol, so leaving it is tough, but many who have managed the feat claim that saying goodbye is the best thing that has ever happened to them.
Lower Energy Levels

Alcohol actually slows you down. In fact, it does this almost instantly. Once you start drinking, your energy levels will plummet. In addition to the immediate effect on your ability to move quickly, you will still feel sluggish the next day.
Alcohol has a lingering effect on your overall energy, and when you stop drinking, you will notice an almost instant improvement! You will be bursting with excess energy and be able to accomplish so many more productive things throughout your day.
Mask Your Problems

Drinking alcohol may help you forget your problems, but it will not help you fix them. Your problems will still be there the next day. When you become sober, you are much more likely to tackle your problems and actually fix them. Put down the glass and face your issues head-on. Your life will most definitely improve!
It's Not Attractive

There is nothing appealing about someone who is drunk. You may think that alcohol will make you more fun or look better to those around you but this is completely wrong. Alcohol will actually make you look crazy. It is not helping you look more attractive at all. In fact, it does the opposite!
Bad Food Choices

When you drink alcohol, you will likely get hungry. However, you will not make the best food choices when in a drunken state. You can say goodbye to whatever diet you might have been on and say hello to excess calories you probably won't even enjoy.
Drinking alcohol will ultimately make you eat terrible foods. There is nothing worse than a bad meal!
